Okay, we’ll admit, this isn’t quite what the Knights looked like…

Arthur poses with bishops alongside fellow Knights of St. Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary (circa 2018)

This is an Afro-futurist rendition of Arthur garbed as a Knight of St. Peter Claver (KPC). The KPC are the oldest and largest Black Catholic lay organization operating today. Arthur served as their 14th Supreme Knight (2000-2006) — there have only been 18 in the KPC’s 116 years and counting.

The Knights of St. Peter Claver was established in Mobile, Alabama in 1909 by Josephite priests and their thirty or so initiates. The KPC was founded to be the Black Catholic alternative to popular fraternal societies like the Masons, Shriners, and Elks. The KPC is a service organization modeled on the Knights of Columbus, with a Ladies Auxiliary and Junior Division.

Gunnar Gundersen, himself a Black Catholic and Knight of St. Peter Claver, writes beautifully on who they are today
