the lessons

A couple quick notes on how to use this webcomic website. First and foremost, welcome to BAD CATHOLICS, GOOD TROUBLE!!! We hope you enjoy our stories, “An Exception to the Rule” and “What Are You Going to Do?”!!! There’s really not a wrong way to engage, so let the Spirit take you where She will.

Think of this website as a kind of museum exhibit. There’s stuff to see, things to listen to, (virtual) plaques to read. How deep you go (or don’t go) is totally up to you. Do keep an eye out for hashtags (#) embedded in the webcomic, which show you some of the real history behind our story. If you’re a teacher and/or student, check out our supplemental materials. If you want to approach our story from a spiritual perspective, we’ve got some suggestions for you. And if you’re like, “Hey man, can’t I just read a comic book in peace??!” that’s cool too! Have fun!

One final word on the relative religious-ness of the site and comic. As you might expect from a project called BAD CATHOLICS, GOOD TROUBLE, the main aim is to introduce Catholics to true stories of Catholic racism and antiracism, Catholic colonialism and anticolonialism. However! That does NOT mean this isn’t for you if you’re not (currently) Catholic! You cannot understand religion in our world without understanding how it (always!) intersects with racism and colonialism. So, go ahead and engage, regardless of what particular tradition or community you call home.
